Classroom
Rules

Welcome to the Classroom Rules page! This page is dedicated to all of the miscellaneous information that we use in the gym. Such items are: grading policies, the gym rules, the playground rules, proper gym attire, and what to do when your child can not participate in gym. If you have any questions about conduct, grading, rules, or proper attire, please feel free to call the school or to e-mail Coach Tuttle anytime.
What to do when your child is sick
or hurt? ![]()
If your child is coming back to school for the first day after being sick or injured, please send a written note to the classroom teacher or Coach Tuttle for the days that your child needs to be excused from participation in Physical Education. If your child needs to be excused from participation in the gym for an extended period of time due to medical reasons, we will need to have a note from the student's doctor.
Conduct Policy
We use a "three strikes and your out" philosophy in Physical Education. If we give an instruction to a student and the student does not follow it, we give the student a verbal warning. If the student continues not to follow the instruction that was given, the student is then placed in timeout for 5 minutes of class time. If the student still continues not to follow the instruction given, the student is placed in timeout for the rest of the class time. The student that has been placed in timeout for this offense will have worksheets to complete while they are in timeout. In addition to this discipline policy, any time a student is placed in timeout, Coach Tuttle will send home a written note explaining why the student was placed in timeout. We do occasionally have extreme cases where we refer the student to the office on the first offense. Examples of extreme cases are fighting, foul language, disrespect to any adult or teacher, and physical harm to another student.
Grading
Policy
Elementary school Physical Education has two grades on each student's report card for each grading period. The first grade is a conduct grade and it is determined by the number of individual weeks that a student is placed in timeout on one or both of the student's days for Physical Education. The student has four weeks that they can be placed in timeout without receiving an "NI" in conduct for Physical Education. If the student is placed in timeout for the fifth week or more, then the student will receive an "NI" for his/her conduct grade.
The second grade is a participation grade. All the student has to do is to try his/her best at a skill and they will do well in Physical Education. At the elementary school level, we only grade on the student's effort and active participation of the skill. We do not grade on how well they can perform the skill. A student can receive an "NI" for their participation grade. If a student is placed in timeout so much that they miss a majority of the skill/participation time, then the student can receive an "NI" for their Physical Education grade.
Proper Gym Attire ![]()
Students need to wear loose fitting clothing to Physical Education. Girls may wear skirts and dresses, but it is suggested that they wear shorts underneath them. Students need to also wear gym shoes while in Physical Education. Gym shoes are "Keds", running shoes, tennis shoes, or any shoe with a covered toe and covered heel that protects the student's foot. Inappropriate shoes are sandals, boots, dress shoes, any high heeled shoe, clogs, flip flops, "Crocs", or any open toed shoe. We require gym shoes to help with the safety of the student when it comes to stepped on toes, twisted ankles, and hurt feet.
